Barcelona defender Carles Puyol has been ruled out for four to six weeks after suffering a knee injury. The 34-year-old had just returned from a cheekbone injury before injuring his knee during Saturday’s 4-1 win over Getafe.
The captain strained his posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and is now set to miss the UEFA Champions League clashes against Spartak Moscow and Benfica, as well as La Liga games against Granada, Sevilla and Real Madrid.
Coach Tito Vilanova also admitted that the experienced Spaniard will be missed in their defence over the next few weeks.
“It’s a problem that we’ve always had at centre-back; we know how important Puyol is to us, he organises us defensively, and he was looking really good,” said Vilanova.
The Catalans will now rely on Gerard Pique, Javier Mascherano as well as B-team player Marc Bartra, who oftens trains with the first team.
