Facebook is taking out all the fake “Likes” on its social network which are caused by spammers, malware and black marketers make businesses for them said Reuters.
With this crackdown Facebook says will make Likes drop by 1 percent.
“We have recently increased our automated efforts to remove Likes on pages that may have been gained by means that violate our Facebook terms,” said Facebook in a blog post.
“While we have always had dedicated protections against each of these threats on Facebook, these improved systems have been specifically configured to identify and take action against suspicious Likes.”
“A Like that doesn’t come from someone truly interested in connecting with a page benefits no one,” said Facebook.
Facebook said these features will help both, the users and the companies.
There are many spam messages in Facebook that make you ‘Like’ something when you hit on something else.
“It’s their currency. Facebook is playing the Federal Reserve, to take the counterfeit currency off the market to ensure that there’s quality in the marketplace,” said Jeremiah Owyang, a partner at research firm Altimeter Group to Reuters.
Facebook did not mention if businesses paid them for fake clicks, but said they have not encourages such practises. Facebook believes this crackdown “will be a positive change for anyone using Face.”
But hackers will always try to surpass any filters placed by Facebook. This change in Facebook comes as Facebook is increasingly turning an advertising platform.
