Earlier this week OMG! Ghana reported on an alleged properties acquired by the former minister of Justice and Attorney General Mrs’ Betty Mould Iddrisu in the UK. The story was exposed by one Jacinta Crispin-Jones, the editor of The Leicester Recorder , a UK based newspaper. The former minister and her legal team has since refuted the story , the immediate past Education Minister has been quoted as saying :
“PLEASE, PLEASE IT IS A COMPLETE AND ABSOLUTE FABRICATION. THAT IS THE FIRST THING. THE SECOND THING IS MY BOYS IN THE UK ARE TELLING ME THAT THAT PAPER DOES NOT EXIST EITHER AND THAT THE ONLY PAPER THAT EXIST WITH A NAME CLOSE TO THIS, DOES ENVIRONMENTAL REPORTING FOR THE PEOPLE OF LEICESTER”.
She continued
“…I HAVE NEVER USED BARCLAYS BANK, HAVE NEVER HAD AN ACCOUNT THERE IN MY LIFE; THAT IS THE FIRST THING. THE SECOND THING IS, I DO NOT KNOW THIS KUMAR CHAP; THIRDLY I HAVE NEVER IN MY ENTIRE LIFE PURCHASED A PROPERTY ABROAD EITHER IN MY NAME OR ANYBODY ELSE’S. IT IS A COMPLETE AND ABSOLUTE FALSEHOOD.”
OMG! Ghana reached out to the Leicester Recorder to provide evidence for their claims and also respond to the former ministers reaction. In a response to our inquiry the recorder noted :
Due to public and international interest, and in response to enquiries from the Ghanaian and African Press has decided to publish other properties bought by Betty Idrissou, former Ghanaian minister and the former director of legal affairs at the commonwealth secretariat from Dr Sirinath Kumar, The property and jewellery tycoon in the last 8 months. These properties are based in Cyprus.
Jacinta Crispin- Jones added :
We have already published pictures of the properties bought in the United Kingdom. Two of these properties are in London and one in Reading. We have attached 2 properties bought in Cyprus for your attention. The first property, a four bedroom house, was bought and paid for on the 6th of March, 2012 and is in the city of Larnaca. This proerty cost £120,000.
The second property was bought and paid for on the 27th of April, 2012 and is in the city of Limassol. This property cost £172,000. The total number of houses Betty Idrissou bought from Dr Sirinath Kumar’s property development complex in Cyprus is 6. We will publish the other 4 in our next edition.
When OMG! Ghana pressed Jacinta as to why the Leicester recorder has decided to reveal such information knowing the outcome and it’s implications especially in an election year, the editor emphatically stated :
Our own research shows Ghana and most African countries are rich yet they rely on financial support and aid from the British Government. Their leaders and government officials must be prevented from stealing millions and millions of pounds of these countries and bringing it abroad . We make no apologies for disclosing this information if it will stop the naked exploitation of Africans.
