The strike action by the Members of the Union of Industry, Commerce and Finance Workers (UNICOF) at Merchant Bank have been called off the strike action by the union temporarily.According to the union,it is a directive from the National Labour Commission..
The stike action started on Wednesday, September 12, 2012 to protest against the board’s refusal to reinstate Reverend Jonas Koranteng-Smart, its local union chairman and also to call for the removal of the company’s board members.Earlier this week, the union members wore red bands to work until a decision was made to embark on this nationwide industrial strike action.
According to Francis Kofi Davor, General Secretary of UNICOF,the board ignored a ruling by the Labour Commission to reinstate Rev. Koranteng-Smart,after he was dismissed for criticizing some policies of the bank.
He explained further that they received a letter from the NLC that the board had taken the case to court, and advised them to call off the strike until the issue was resolved at the court. As such, the staff of the bank have resumed work pending the court hearing slated for September 27, 2012
