Music: R2Bee’s “Agyeiii” (Remixes EP)

Free until the end of the month, an EP of remixes from R2Bees, one of the most popular bands in Ghana today. They’re also one of the key groups responsible for popularising afrobeats worldwide, their music is on rotation in the UK and they perform regularly across Europe. Speaking of which, if you’re in the UK at the end of this month, you can catch them live when they perform at Wembley Arena in Africa Unplugged, the biggest concert of African urban music ever staged in Europe. They scored their first major hit in 2009 with Kiss Your Hand ft. Nigerian star Wande Coal. The single went on to win Afro-Pop Song of the Year at the Ghana Music Awards, and is still a favourite around here (tune in to This Is Africa Hit Radio). They followed that up last autumn with Agyeiii (aka Ajei; also on rotation on TIA Hit Radio), featuring motormouth rapper and Azonto populariser Sarkodie, Nana Boroo, and driven by a beat by Killbeatz.

In Ghana agyeiii means “ouch”. It’s the sound you make when you are hurt, or when someone is hurting you – which can also be in a “good” way, as suggested by this song.
