New Facebook status update: ‘I’m a sex offender’
Here’s a drop-down on Facebook we haven’t seen yet. Sex offenders in Louisiana must now update their status to reflect their criminal designation. State Rep. Jeff Thompson says the new law, the first of its kind in the nation, adds full disclosure of a convicted individual’s profile on Facebook and other social networking sites, expanding current sex-offender registration requirements already common in many states.
Facebook already bars sex offenders from using its site, but the Republican lawmaker said the bill is designed to ensure there are no lapses.
“I don’t want to leave it in the hands of social network or Facebook administrators, ‘Gee, I hope someone is telling the truth,’” Thompson said.
