“Faith healer” parents who let their teenage son die, believing medical intervention was against the rule of God, have been released on parole after pleading guilty to negligent homicide. Austin Sprout, 16, died last December after his appendix burst, his parents’ well-meaning prayers no match for the condition.
The couple, of Eugene, Ore., belongs to the General Assembly and Church of the First Born, which interprets a passage in the New Testament’s Gospel of James as a dictum that the sick should only be prayed for and anointed with oils. Austin’s parents Russel and Brandi Bellew have been released on five years’ parole on the condition they seek medical care for their remaining six children if they are ill for longer than a day.
