Dear BET,
Congratulations on yet another successful Awards night which brought together all the big wigs in the Entertainment Industry across the globe. And as usual, the yearly ritual of paying a glowing tribute to departed souls was the order of the day. And as if on cue, another great soul was lost before the event. In my wildest wish I see you reading this short note but if you don’t my point will still be sent across.
I have no problem as an African sitting in a developing country with whoever won what on the awards night. But I write to you to register my displeasure about how our revered African Acts are treated during programs which are meant to be for ‘Blacks’, Black Entertainment Television Awards (BET Awards) you call it.
Dear BET, Is it becoming a tradition that only Africa should have two Joint Winners for a single category? Of Course No! Even in the wake of that, the pomp and pageantry that comes with winning such an award is denied our stars who toil day and night to make a BET appearance. Instead of the normal trophies awarded on the well designed stages, we are offered plaques backstage where only mobile phones cover the presentation. If it is for plaques, then our star Sarkodie has a lot in his locket.
What sense does it make to invite someone from another continent just to give him an award backstage. You could as well have sent it via “Fedex” or” DHL” if it was that necessary.
Whiles Our African Acts Put on their best attire from renowned fashion designers, our colleagues from the other side wore jeans and baseball caps. Could it be for how low they regard the BET’s?? Well, we might just pardon their culture and talk about this some other time.
Dear BET,all i’ve been wanting to ask from you in the preceding paragraphs of this short note is for a LITTLE RESPECT and DECENCY to be meted our to our black fellows. I congratulate Sarkodie and Wizkid for their award and also Ice Price for his nomination. I also congratulate the BET for the glimmering tribute to Whitney Houston. In the End Black Entertainment won so please Entertain Fellow Blacks.
