Police are investigating after a human hand was found in the mail at an Ottawa post office, hours after a decomposing foot was sent to Canada’s Conservative Party.
Detectives said both packages originated in the city of Montreal, where a dismembered torso was discovered by a janitor in a suitcase in a pile of rubbish.
All three body parts will undergo forensic testing to discover if they came from the same person.
The tests will also reveal whether the person was alive when the parts were severed, according to public broadcaster CBC.
The first package was partly opened by the receptionist at the headquarters of Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s party, who called the police after seeing blood stains and becoming overwhelmed by the smell.
A hazardous-material unit was alerted, and when the package was opened a severed foot was found inside.
Police said the package was addressed to the Conservative Party of Canada and not to a specific person. Mr Harper’s office is not located at the party headquarters.
Hours later, a second suspicious package was intercepted by Canada Post at a nearby mail sorting facility which contained the human hand.
The police have interviewed post office staff as well as morgues and hospitals in the area.
Immigration minister Jason Kenney told reporters that it was a “completely disgusting criminal act,” which was “bizarre and horrifying”.
Conservative parliament member Brad Trost said posting the foot was probably someone’s “sick idea”.
“I don’t think any of us are thinking this necessarily has anything to with politics,” he said.
