Rabid radio show hosts often make the argument against lesbian couples adopting children that the lack of a male role model damages kids. But, according to a far-reaching, 26-year study by UCLA’s Williams Institute and the University of Amsterdam, there was barely any perceivable difference in the psychological outcomes of children raised by lesbians who had a male role model around, and those that did not.
While the sample size was relatively low (78 children) and largely socio-economically homogenous (they were all middle-class), the study’s authors also found that the absence of a male influence did not make teens — including boys — more or less likely to beanxious, depressed, or angry. Guess folks will just have to go back to the old “Adam and Steve” argument.
