Relatives of a teenage girl charged with stabbing her 20-year-old brother to death said Saturday that she was only trying to defend herself.Yocairis Diaz, 18, allegedly stabbed her brother, Frank Fortuna, in the neck with a kitchen knife during a fight that erupted in the living room of their Woodhaven home about 5:30 p.m. Friday, cops said. Diaz immediately called a pal, who picked her up from the 88th St. home before police arrived, sources said.
Fortuna was later rushed to Jamaica Hospital, but could not be saved.
Their 19-year-old brother, who witnessed the stabbing, told police that the spat began after Fortuna tried to take Diaz’s cell phone, sources said.
Relatives said Diaz was only acting in self defense.“She just got tired of being abused by him,” said her father, Jose Diaz.
Her friend, Nina Ortiz, 23, said Diaz tried to move away from her brother, who had a prior arrest for assault and often picked fights with her. Cops later found Diaz hiding at her friend’s home and cuffed her. She was charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon. She was awaiting arraignment Saturday.
