Manchester United have been handed a huge boost after Robin van Persie was declared fit for the visit of Wigan on Saturday. The Holland international was a major doubt heading into the Barclays Premier League clash after sustaining a thigh injury on international duty.
But Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed the £24million signing will be in his squad. Darren Fletcher is also poised to make his first-team return having not played since November. The midfielder, who suffers from a chronic bowel condition, played 90 minutes for United’s reserves earlier this week.
Shinji Kagawa, who was a doubt, after missing Japan’s 1-0 over Iraq in a World Cup qualifier on Tuesday, is also available for section.
‘Darren Fletcher is in the squad, to give him a boost,’ said Ferguson at Friday’s pre-match press conference. ‘At this moment in time everything looks fine.’ Ferguson also confirmed that he will be without Phil Jones for up to ten weeks, but says Chris Smalling is nearing a return to action.
‘On the injury front, everyone’s fit, apart from the ones we know about – Jones and Smalling,’ added Ferguson. Jones was a bad blow for us. He got an injury in training last weekend and he’ll be out for eight to 10 weeks.
‘We expect Smalling to be back training by the end of the month. There’s a little bit of comfort in that sense, given our centre-back situation. But with Jonny [Evans] back we’re in a better position than we were a couple of weeks ago.’
