The squad only returned home to the UK on Monday, but the striker and his wife Coleen quickly boarded another flight and touched down in LA yesterday. Wayne – who was blasted for his performances in the competition – cut a deeply disappointed figure as the couple walked through LAX airport.
Clad in jeans, T-shirt and a jacket, the Manchester United ace looked deadly serious as he geared up for a much-needed break in the sun. WAG Coleen, on the hand, managed an occasional smile as she strutted alongside her man in a pair of wedges, jeans and a snakeskin blazer.
There was no sign of their son Kai, who had joined Coleen in Poland and Ukraine to support Wayne during England’s floundering campaign.
They crashed out on Sunday after their penalty shootout defeat to Italy in the Quarter Finals. At least Wayne – who returned to the team for the final two games after suspension – can take heart from the winning goal he scored against Ukraine in the final group game.
But he’ll be eager to take refuge in the States amid criticism of his overall performances.
Former England manager Fabio Capello has been the latest public figure to put the boot in. He said:
“After seeing the latest game, I think Rooney only understands Scottish. That’s because he only plays well in Manchester, where Sir Alex Ferguson speaks Scottish.”
